Riverside, village pub with self-catering lodges

The John Thompson Inn

About us

In 1968, John & Ann Thompson converted their 15th century farmhouse into what is now known as:
The John Thompson Inn.

It was then, and remains now, a unique pub - being the first in Great Britain to be named after the licensee and owner. The interior consists of a wealth of oak beams and antique settles.

On display you will find a large collection of original paintings and prints, most prominently watercolours of local village scenes by three generations of the Gresley family (many having been painted in the original farmhouse) and a complete collection of Cecil Aldrin prints of the Bluemarket Races, dated 1901. The array of original antiques throughout adds to the uniqueness of the inn.

Privately owned by the Thompson family since the 1930's, you will find personal hospitality combined with friendly & attentive service. The atmosphere at the John Thompson Inn is relaxed, friendly & informal, whilst the overall impression is of a pub which is comfortable, light and welcoming. It is our attention to detail & high levels of service that ensures your whole visit with us will be truly refreshing.

The location enjoys unrivalled views over stunning countryside, including the National Forest, close to the banks of the River Trent. During the summer months you can let the days laze away, enjoying our lunchtime menu, chilled wines & beers & complimentary daily newspapers, forgetting about the worries of the week.
